If your flight is delayed, cancelled, or overbooked, you may be entitled to compensation under the SHY Passenger Regulation. This regulation is designed to protect passengers traveling to, from, or within Turkey when flights are disrupted.
Similar to European rules, SHY sets fixed compensation amounts based on flight distance, making it easier to understand what you can claim.
Use a simple flight compensation calculator to quickly check how much compensation you may be entitled to.

What Are the Flight Compensation Amounts Under Turkish Shy Regulation?
Under the SHY regulation, compensation is divided into the following categories:
- €100 for domestic flights within Turkey
- €250 for flights up to 1,500 km
- €400 for flights between 1,500–3,500 km
- €600 for flights over 3,500 km
Compensation is usually paid in Turkish Lira equivalent, based on the euro value.
Compensation amounts under SHY are similar to those under EU Regulation 261/2004, with one key difference: the lowest tier in Turkey is €100 for domestic flights, whereas in Europe the minimum compensation starts at €250.
| Flight Distance | Compensation |
|---|---|
| Domestic flights within Turkey | €100 |
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 |
How Flight Delay Length Affects SHY Compensation
Under the SHY Passenger Regulation, compensation is based on your arrival delay at the final destination, not just the departure time. The key moment is when the aircraft doors open, as this determines your actual arrival time.
Compensation by delay length:
- 3+ hours delay: Compensation is due, provided the airline is responsible
- Under 3 hours: No compensation
Always check your actual arrival time, as this is what determines your eligibility.
SHY Flight Compensation for Long Haul Flights
For long-haul flights (over 3,500 km), if the delay is between 3 and 4 hours, compensation may be reduced to 50% of the maximum amount (i.e., €300 instead of €600), depending on the circumstances.
When Are You Entitled to SHY Flight Compensation?
You may qualify for compensation under the SHY Passenger Regulation if:
- Your flight arrives at your final destination 3 hours or more late, or
- Your flight is cancelled at short notice
- You are denied boarding because there are not enough seats
However, compensation is only payable if the disruption was within the airline’s control.
When Can You Get Flight Compensation Under SHY Rules?
- Technical problems
- Airline staff strikes
- Operational issues
- Crew shortages
When You Can’t Get Flight Compensation (Extraordinary Circumstances)?
- Severe or extreme weather
- Air traffic control restrictions or strikes
- Airport closures
- Political instability or security risks
If the disruption falls under extraordinary circumstances, compensation is usually not owed—but passengers are still entitled to care and assistance.
