Refund on flight cancellation and compensation are often confused — and it’s easy to see why. Airlines frequently use vague or overlapping language, sometimes offering a refund as if it replaces all other rights, leaving passengers unsure of what they are actually entitled to.
In reality, flight compensation and refunds are two separate rights under EU passenger law, and one does not automatically cancel the other.

Refund on Flight Cancellation
What is a refund on flight cancellation?
A flight cancellation refund is the return of the money you paid for your ticket when your flight is cancelled and you choose not to travel.
In simple terms:
- the flight doesn’t operate
- the flight wasn’t cancelled by you
- you don’t take a replacement flight
- the airline must refund the unused ticket price
- the airline must refund you regardless of the reason for the cancellation — whether it was caused by extraordinary circumstances, technical issues, strikes, or staffing problems.
A refund is different from compensation — it gives you your money back, not extra payment for the inconvenience.
Flight Cancellation Compensation
Flight cancelled? Compensation might be due.
If it’s a last-minute flight cancellation (less than 2 weeks before departure) that has happened due to the airline’s fault, you may be entitled to compensation of 250, 400 or 600 euros.
The longer the flight, the larger the compensation amount.
You are notified 7-14 days before departure:
- You choose a new flight that departs not more than 2 hours before the scheduled departure time, and arrives at the destination no later than 4 hours after the scheduled arrival time. In this case, compensation is not due.
- In all other cases, you may have a right to compensation.
You are notified less than 7 days before departure:
- You choose a new flight that departs not more than 1 hour before the scheduled departure time, and arrives at the destination no later than 2 hours after the scheduled arrival time. In this case, you can’t claim compensation.
- In all other cases, you may have a right to compensation.

You Can Receive Both a Flight Cancellation Refund and Compensation
In some situations, passengers are entitled to both a refund for a cancelled flight and financial compensation.
This usually happens when your flight is cancelled less than 14 days before departure, the cancellation is within the airline’s control (meaning no extraordinary circumstances apply), and you choose not to travel and request a refund instead of rebooking.
In this case, the refund returns the money you paid for the unused ticket, while compensation is paid separately to cover the inconvenience caused by the last-minute cancellation.
