Turkish Airlines is one of the main airlines operating flights to and from Turkey, connecting passengers across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas through major hubs like Istanbul Airport. With such a large network, delays, cancellations, and other disruptions can sometimes affect both domestic and international flights.

To protect passengers in these situations, Turkey introduced the SHY Passenger Regulation. This law requires airlines to provide compensation and assistance when flights are significantly delayed, cancelled, or overbooked, as long as the airline is responsible.

Turkish Airlines Compensation Under SHY Regulation

Under the SHY Passenger Regulation, if your flight with Turkish Airlines is disrupted due to the airline’s responsibility, you may be entitled to compensation of up to €600, depending on the flight distance and the circumstances of the disruption.

In addition to Turkish Airlines compensation, the airline is required to provide services such as meals, accommodation, and alternative travel arrangements to minimise the impact on affected passengers.

Turkish Airlines Flight Cancellation Compensation

Passengers may be entitled to compensation if their flight is cancelled at short notice and the airline is responsible for the disruption. This typically applies when the cancellation is caused by operational issues such as technical problems or staffing shortages.

Turkish Airlines Flight Delay Compensation

If a flight arrives at its final destination 3 hours or more later than scheduled, passengers may qualify for flight delay compensation under the SHY Passenger Regulation, provided the airline is at fault.

The amount of compensation depends on the flight distance, with longer routes generally resulting in higher compensation.

Turkish Airlines Denied Boarding Compensation

Denied boarding usually happens when airlines overbook flights and there are not enough seats for all passengers. If you are involuntarily denied boarding despite having a valid ticket and arriving on time, you are entitled to:

  • Turkish Airlines compensation
  • The choice between a refund or alternative flight
  • Immediate assistance (meals, hotel if needed, etc.)

Passengers who voluntarily give up their seat in exchange for benefits may receive compensation offered by the airline, but this is usually lower than standard denied boarding compensation and is treated differently from involuntary denied boarding.

How Much is Turkish Airlines Compensation?

Flight compensation amounts are calculated based on the distance of the flight. Compensation is usually paid in Turkish Lira equivalent.

Flight compensation under the SHY Passenger Regulation is mainly based on flight distance, ranging from €100 to €600, but also depends on the type of disruption and your arrival delay.

For delays, you must usually arrive 3+ hours late to qualify, and long-haul compensation may be reduced if the delay is between 3–4 hours.

For cancellations, compensation depends on how late the flight was cancelled and whether a suitable alternative was offered.

Turkish Airlines Refund for a Cancelled Flight

When a Turkish Airlines flight is cancelled, passengers are entitled to a full ticket refund under the SHY Passenger Regulation, provided they choose not to continue their journey.

The airline must offer passengers a choice between a refund or an alternative flight, and if a refund is selected, it should cover the unused portion of the ticket (or the full ticket if the trip is no longer relevant).

Refunds are returned using the original method of payment. The refund right applies regardless of the reason for cancellation (including extraordinary circumstances), meaning that even if Turkish Airlines compensation is not owed, passengers can still request a flight cancellation refund.

What Is the SHY Passenger Regulation?

The SHY Passenger Regulation is a law that protects airline passengers when their flights are delayed, cancelled, or overbooked. It sets clear rules that airlines must follow to ensure passengers receive flight compensation and assistance when travel plans are disrupted.

The regulation was introduced by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the authority responsible for regulating aviation in Turkey. Its goal is to make sure airlines treat passengers fairly and provide support when problems occur.

SHY applies to passengers traveling:

  • To Turkey on Turkish airlines
  • On domestic flights within Turkey

The regulation is similar to EU Regulation 261/2004, which protects passengers in the European Union.
